General Explanations

Interactionism – This theory bears the following characteristics
·    It is a micro/ small scale group focused theory.
·    It is not conservative – allows for social change.
·    Emphasizes interaction between and amongst groups.

Assumptions

  • Human interaction is based upon the interpretation and use of symbols
  • Meanings and symbols are largely shared by members of society. (Haralambos & Holborn Student Handbook – 2002)
  • Individuals understand each other’s actions by taking the role of the other.
  • Rules and structures direct social action and shape the interpretation of meaning to some extent; however these rules and structures are transient.
