1. HAVE A DEDICATED 'STUDY ZONE'

Studies have shown that when learners carve out a dedicated study space, this improves concentration. Your study zone may be in your bedroom, the dining room, patio (virtually any place) where you can get peace for an extended period that would allow for concentration and reflection.

2. PLAN IT OUT

One of the most effective ways to maximise your study time is to 'plan out' your sessions. Ideally, you should set up a study timetable, however, if you don't have one already set up, that's ok. Simply take five to ten minutes each day if you prefer to plan immediately before you begin your study session and write down which subjects or topics you need to study and how long the session would be. You also need to include, the study tasks involved in your study session. Is essay planning? Essay writing? or Theory review?

Essay planning - after you choose your essay question plan out :

A. How will I answer the question? Am I agreeing/disagreeing/ analyzing or highlighting arguments on both sides of the issue under discussion?

B. Plan out the logical sequencing of the essay: Introduction, Body (with theories and supporting empirical evidence), Conclusion

Essay Writing - allocate 5 minutes for planning, 25 minutes for active writing on your essay and five minutes to re-read and edit. (This method is also suitable for exam conditions)

Theory review - choose the theory or theories you will review. Try to apply theory to social issues.

3. EAT BEFORE STUDY

When you eat before the study, you are better able to concentrate for longer periods. High-protein meals may help to keep you alert and motivated. Avoid overloading on carbohydrates just before your study session, it can make you feel sleepy and inert.  See our study tips video above, which highlights some of the foods best suited to facilitate a great study session.

4. STAY HYDRATED

Drink an adequate amount of water. Keep a water bottle close at hand near your study area, that you can reach for whenever you feel thirsty or a bit tired.  Avoid caffeinated drinks, soda, and flavoured water.
